What Is TPAR?

The Taxable Payments Annual Report (TPAR) is a report certain businesses need to lodge each year, detailing payments made to contractors and subcontractors for services. It was introduced to help the ATO match up income that contractors report against what they were actually paid.

Who Needs to Lodge a TPAR?

TPAR obligations apply to businesses in a specific list of industries, including building and construction, cleaning services, courier and road freight services, information technology services, and security, investigation or surveillance services. If your business pays contractors in any of these industries — even alongside other work — it’s worth checking whether TPAR applies to you.

What Information Goes Into a TPAR

For each contractor you’ve paid during the financial year, the TPAR generally needs their ABN, name and address, and the total amount paid to them (including GST). This is why keeping contractor payment records organised and correctly coded throughout the year matters — trying to reconstruct twelve months of contractor payments from scratch in July is a lot harder than it needs to be.

How Good Bookkeeping Makes TPAR Easy

If your contractor payments are coded consistently throughout the year in Xero or MYOB, pulling together your TPAR becomes a simple export rather than a manual reconstruction project. This is part of what we set up as standard for clients in TPAR-applicable industries.

GoBookaroo provides bookkeeping and BAS preparation support. We are not a registered BAS Agent, Tax Agent or accountant unless stated otherwise, and we’re happy to work alongside your existing accountant or BAS Agent to confirm your specific TPAR obligations.
