Self-managing an NDIS plan gives you more flexibility over how funding is spent, but it also puts the record-keeping responsibility squarely on you. Here’s what actually matters for staying organised.

Keep every receipt, every time

The NDIA can ask for evidence of how funding was spent at any point, so every invoice and receipt needs to be kept — not just for supports you think might get checked. A simple habit of photographing or uploading receipts as they come in beats trying to reconstruct months later.

Code spending against the right support category

NDIS funding is split into categories, and spending needs to be tracked against the correct one, not just lumped together. Getting this wrong doesn’t just make reporting harder — it can also create issues if spending doesn’t match what a category was meant to cover.

Separate NDIS spending from everything else

Whether you’re an individual self-managing your own plan or a small provider managing funds on behalf of participants, keeping NDIS transactions clearly separated from unrelated spending makes everything easier to track and explain if it’s ever reviewed.

Don’t leave it until claim time

Trying to sort out three months of receipts and invoices right before a plan review is stressful and error-prone. A regular, even monthly, tidy-up keeps things manageable.
