If your books are months (or longer) behind, you’re not the first business owner to end up here — it happens quietly, one busy quarter at a time, and by the time you notice, it feels too big to tackle. Catch-up bookkeeping is simply the process of working backwards through that backlog until your records are accurate and up to date again.

What catch-up bookkeeping actually involves

It starts with reconciling every bank and credit card transaction we haven’t yet matched against your records, period by period, so nothing gets missed or double-counted. From there we code transactions correctly, chase down any missing invoices or receipts, reconcile GST so your BAS periods line up properly, and tidy up payroll and superannuation records if those have fallen behind too. We work through it in order rather than jumping around, so each month closes out properly before we move to the next.

How the cost works

Catch-up work is usually quoted separately from an ongoing monthly retainer, because the amount of work depends on how far behind things are and how messy the existing file is. The main drivers are how many months (or years) need reconciling, the volume of transactions per month, and whether categorisation has to be rebuilt from scratch or just corrected. We’ll always look at your file first and give you a clear quote before starting — no open-ended hourly guesswork.

What happens once you’re caught up

The goal isn’t just to tidy up and walk away — it’s to get you to a point where your books are genuinely BAS-ready, your financial position is visible again, and you can move onto regular monthly support so you never end up this far behind again. Most clients who come to us for a catch-up end up staying on for ongoing monthly bookkeeping, simply because it’s a lot less stressful than letting it build up a second time.

Our bookkeeping clean-up and catch-up service is built exactly for this — have a read or get in touch and we’ll take a look at where things stand.

GoBookaroo provides bookkeeping and Xero administrative support only, and is not a registered BAS Agent, Tax Agent or accountant unless stated otherwise.
