A lot of small business owners have never seen a proper management report and don’t realise it’s something their bookkeeper should be producing — not just BAS figures, but a short, regular snapshot of how the business is actually performing.

What it typically includes

At a minimum, a useful monthly report covers a profit and loss summary for the month (and how it compares to the month before), a balance sheet snapshot, a look at cash flow in and out, and a note on anything outstanding — unpaid invoices owed to you, or bills you still owe. For businesses with inventory or project work, it might also flag margins or job profitability.

Why it’s worth having even if no one’s asking for it

Most small businesses aren’t legally required to produce management reports the way a larger company might be, which is exactly why so many go without them — and end up making decisions on gut feel instead of numbers. A report that lands in your inbox each month means you know where you stand before you commit to a big purchase, take on new staff, or chase a slow-paying client, instead of finding out after the fact.

How we handle it

For clients on an ongoing retainer, we build this in as a standard part of the service rather than an add-on — it’s a natural output of the reconciliation work we’re already doing each month.

Have a look at our management reporting and advisory page for more detail, or get in touch to talk about adding it to your current setup.
