Bank reconciliation is one of those jobs that’s never finished — new transactions land every day, and matching them correctly is what keeps your Xero file telling the truth about your business. Xero’s AI reconciliation has had a real upgrade through 2026, and it’s worth knowing what’s changed.

What’s different

Xero’s matching suggestions are noticeably smarter — picking up recurring suppliers, splitting transactions that cover more than one thing, and learning from how you’ve coded similar transactions in the past. The aim is fewer “no suggested match” transactions sitting in your bank feed, and less manual digging to work out what a payment actually was.

Why this matters for your numbers

The further behind reconciliations fall, the less your Xero reports tell you about what’s actually happening in the business — cash flow, GST and profit all become guesswork. Faster, more accurate matching means your file stays closer to real time, which matters most for businesses trying to make decisions off their numbers rather than just preparing for tax time.

Still worth checking

Smarter suggestions aren’t the same as correct ones. A suggested match that’s accepted without a second look can still miscode GST or lump two different expenses together, so it’s worth having a regular check-in on what’s being accepted automatically, particularly if you’ve recently turned on more automation.

If your bank rules and automation haven’t been reviewed in a while — or you want a hand testing newer reconciliation features before relying on them — that’s exactly what our Xero training & optimisation service covers.
