Xero doesn’t stand still. Every year it rolls out new tools, and 2026 has brought a solid batch of AI-driven features aimed at taking manual work off your plate. The problem for most small business owners isn’t a lack of new tools — it’s knowing which ones are actually worth switching on, and how to try them without risking the numbers you rely on.
What’s new in Xero in 2026
A few of the more useful updates we’re seeing rolled out across Xero this year:
- JAX (Just Ask Xero) — an AI assistant built into Xero that can answer plain-language questions about your business and help with day-to-day tasks, rather than you hunting through reports.
- Automatic bank reconciliation — Xero’s AI now matches and suggests reconciliations with more accuracy, cutting down the manual checking that usually eats into a Friday afternoon.
- Smart Document Capture — photograph or email a bill and Xero pulls out the supplier, date, amount and tax automatically, instead of you typing it in line by line.
- Missing receipt detection and pre-payment checks — Xero can flag an unusual amount, an altered bank detail or an unfamiliar supplier before a payment goes out, which is a handy second set of eyes.
- Cash flow tools — including suggestions on delaying non-critical bills and automated follow-ups on overdue invoices, so chasing payments takes less manual effort.
Availability depends on your Xero plan and is still rolling out across regions, so not every business will see every feature yet — and a few are still in early access.
Worth trying — but not on your real file first
New features sound great in theory, but switching one on inside your live business file is how small mistakes turn into a messy reconciliation months later. Before any new Xero feature goes anywhere near your actual numbers, it’s worth testing it properly.
That’s exactly what Xero’s built-in Demo Company is for. Every Xero subscription includes a sandbox version of Xero pre-loaded with sample data, completely separate from your real file. You can turn on a new feature, see exactly how it behaves, and decide whether it’s actually useful for your business — all without any risk to your real reconciliations, reports or BAS-ready records.
