Two of the quieter but genuinely useful additions to Xero in 2026 are built around catching problems before they cost you money, rather than cleaning them up afterwards.
Missing receipt detection
Xero can now flag transactions that look like they should have a receipt or bill attached but don’t — handy for keeping your records BAS-ready and avoiding a scramble at tax time trying to remember what a transaction was for six months ago.
Pre-payment checks
Before a payment goes out, Xero can flag anything unusual — an amount that’s out of character, bank details that have changed for a regular supplier, or a supplier you haven’t paid before. It’s a simple second check that can catch both honest mistakes and the kind of invoice scams that increasingly target small businesses.
Why this matters for small business owners
Invoice fraud and changed bank details are a real and growing problem, and it’s often a business’s busiest, most time-poor period when a fake invoice slips through. A built-in check that flags something unusual before the money leaves your account is worth having switched on, even if it occasionally asks you to double-check something that was perfectly fine.
If you want help understanding which of these checks are available on your plan, or getting your Xero file set up properly so they actually catch what they’re meant to, our Xero training & optimisation service covers this for Norwest and Hills District businesses.
GoBookaroo provides bookkeeping and Xero administrative support only, and is not a registered BAS Agent, Tax Agent or accountant unless stated otherwise.
